Flat soft and fluffy sandwich steamed bun filled with meat in the middle.

Gua Bao | 割包

What IS Gua Bao |割包

In today’s post we will learn how to make these yummy soft Bao's. Gua Bao |割包 also known as Bao Buns or Pork Belly Buns. A Traditional Gua Bao 割包 is filled with a slice of pork belly and other ingredients in between a flat sandwich steamed bun.

How To Make Gua Bao |割包

These buns are really simple to make, very soft, yummy and I think they look really cute and tiny. It’s close to the Mantou Steamed Buns I made before with a little adjustment. They’re so fun as well since everyone can make their own little sandwich. For our buns we will be using one of my favorite filling! I made some yummy Korean Style Spicy Chicken to serve with my buns. Feel free to use YOUR favorite meat/filling to customize to your liking!

Gua Bao Recipe | 割包

Ingredients

✿ 400 Grams Flour
✿ 7 Grams Active Dry Yeast
✿ Little Sugar
✿ Luke Warm Milk
✿ Oil

First activate the yeast. To activate the yeast add a little LUKEWARM milk and sugar to the yeast. Stir well and set aside until activated (approx. 5 min).

Add the yeast mixture to the flour. Slowly add lukewarm milk or water to the flour. Knead until a non sticky dough forms. When dough forms keep kneading for about 5 more minutes until smooth.

Place the dough into a bowl. Spread some oil over the dough and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rest for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

After doubled in size, knead the dough a little to remove the air inside. Roll the dough into a string. Cut them in preferred sizes and roll them into a ball.

Flatten the dough with a roller. Brush some oil on top and fold it in half.

Spray the Bao Sandwiches with some water to prevent them from drying out. Let it rest for 30 minutes before steaming.

Steam Bao Buns for 10 minutes on high heat.

Serve the Bao Buns hot with your favorite filling. I made some korean style spicy chicken for my Bao Buns.

TIPS & NOTES
✿ There are no exact measurements for the milk. Keep adding until a non sticky dough forms.
✿ Instead of using milk, you can use water as well.
