How to make Tapioca Balls

You might have heard that there is a shortage of boba pearls / tapioca balls these days. This is a perfect time to learn how to make tapioca pearls, so today I will teach you how to make homemade tapioca pearls! 🧋

Boba balls - boba pearls also known as tapioca balls or tapioca pearls (粉圓) are small chewy balls made from tapioca starch. Most popular ways of using these brown sugar boba are in bubble tea drinks. They’re added to drinks to add some texture. They can also be used for other recipes!

Tapioca Balls Ingredients

✿ 50 Grams (Dark) Brown Sugar
✿ 4 Tablespoon Water
✿ 90 Grams Tapioca Starch

Tapioca Balls Dough

In a pan add sugar and water. On medium heat cook until the sugar is dissolved.




Turn down the heat to low. Then add the tapioca starch.
*From the 90 grams tapioca starch, add 2 tablespoons of the tapioca starch.
Keep stirring and cook until thickened. Mix in the remaining tapioca starch and combine.

How To Prepare TAPIOCA Balls

Pour the mixture onto a working bench. Start kneading until a dough forms. Keep kneading for 2 - 5 minutes to make it smooth and stretchy.

*Careful it is hot in the beginning!

🧋Let’s start making boba! 🧋
Roll it in a string and cut in desired sizes. Then roll them into mini balls. Dust them with tapioca starch to prevent them from sticking.




Bring enough water to a boil. Add boba to boiling water. Once tohe bobas are floating place a lid on top and simmer it for 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes turn of the heat. Leave it covered for another 10 minutes.





Cool the boba in ice water to make it more chewy.

How To make Sugar Syrup For Boba Drinks

Ratio brown sugar : water 1:1.
Dissolve sugar and cook until large bubble forms. Add the cooked boba and cook until syrupy.

Now it’s ready to use for drinks or desserts! ❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

TIPS & NOTES
✿ Use dark brown sugar (Muscovado Sugar recommended) for a darker boba ball.
✿ For an even more darker boba you can add some black food coloring.
✿ Cool the boba in ice water to make a more chewy tapioca ball.
✿ Cooked tapioca balls is best to consume the same day.
✿ You can store uncooked tapioca balls in the freezer for up to 3 months.
