Chinese Lucky Food | Chinese Prosperity Cake Fa Gao | 发糕

The new year is approaching and that means it’s time to make some lucky food again! This year we will learn how to make fa gao, also known as Chinese prosperity cakes,Fortune cake, Cantonese sponge cake, Chinese smiling steamed cake or blooming flowers. Fa gao are called smiling cake because when you steam them they will split open and it will look like the cake is smiling.

Chinese Fortune Cake 发糕 is usually eaten during Chinese New Years since it symbolizes fortune. This Fa Gao recipe is simple to make and no oven is needed, making this a no bake recipe. You can personalize the chinese prosperity cake to your preferences by adding food coloring and or flavoring to make different colors and flavors.

Fa Gao | Prosperity Cake 发糕

Fa Gao Ingredients

✿ 240 Grams Flour
✿ 260 Milliliters Hot Water
✿ 100 Grams Sugar
✿ 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
✿ ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda
✿ 4 Tablespoon Oil

Fa Gao Batter

Make Batter

Mix Until Smooth Batter.

Chinese Prosperity Cake

Fill Molds

Fill Cupcake Molds.

Steam

Steam High Heat 20 Min.

Chinese Fortune Cake

Cool Down

Enjoy!

Add sugar to the hot water. Whisk until sugar is dissolved.

Sift the flour. Add sugar - water mixture. Whisk until smooth and clump free. Add the oil and whisk until combined.

Optional: Add food coloring and or flavoring.





Fill molds. I am using egg tart molds with cupcake liners in it.







Bring a pot of water to a boil. Carefully place the cake inside. Steam at high heat for 20 minutes.






Transfer to a cooling rack and enjoy!

TIPS & NOTES
✿ Adjust sweetness to personal preferences.
✿ Use brown sugar for brown fa gao.
