Chinese Lucky Food | Chinese Dumpling Gok Zai 角仔

New year has just passed but the Chinese New Year is coming up! That means it’s time to make some lucky Chinese food. Today we will learn how to make yau gok snack! We will make Yau Kok, also known as Gok Zai 角仔, Peanut Puff Dumpling, Oil dumplings, Crispy Triangles, New Year Dumplings Or Oil Horn.

What is Yau Kok?

Yau Kok is a Chinese deep fried dumpling with a sweet filling with coconut, sesame seeds and crushed peanuts. They’re crispy on the outside with a sweet filling on the inside.

Gok Zai is considered a lucky food. Yau Gok is believed that it will bring good fortune for the upcoming year. Cantonese sweet fried peanut dumplings are considered a lucky food because the shape of the peanut puff resembles a ingot, a form of currency in ancient China.

Chinese Peanut Puffs | Yau KOk 油角

Yau Kok Ingredients

Dough:
✿ 150 Grams Cake Flour
✿ 40 Grams Butter
✿ 1 Egg
✿ 35 Grams Sugar

Filling:
✿ 75 Grams Peanuts
✿ ¼ Cup Sugar
✿ 40 Grams Sesame Seeds
✿ 40 Grams Coconut Flakes

Knead Until A Smooth Dough.

Chinese Peanut Puff Yau Kok

Deep Fry

Deep Fry Until Golden Brown.

Let's start with the filling. Separately toast the peanuts, sesame seeds and coconut flakes until fragrant. Cook on Low heat for 5 - 10 Min.

Crush peanuts with a rolling pin. Add toasted ingredients and sugar to a bowl. Mix until combined.


Let's make the dough. Mix eggs and sugar until combined. Mix butter with flour until crumbly. Use a scraper to incorporate the butter in the flour.

Make a well in the middle. Pour in the egg mixture. Mix and knead until a dough forms. Let it rest at room temperature for 30 min.


Dust working space. Roll out the dough +/- 2mm thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut out circles. Size depends on the size of peanut puffs you'd like to make. Take a piece of dough.

Add about 1 teaspoon of filling. Fold it double and pinch to close. Fold the edges to create a pattern.




Heat up oil on medium heat. Deep fry until golden brown. You can also use an air fryer. Air Fry 320F for 10 - 12 minutes
