Chinese Black Sesame Soup Recipe | 芝麻糊
Black sesame soup, 芝麻糊, is a popular Chinese dessert. At most asian supermarkets you can find instant black sesame drinks. You just add hot water to the sesame soup and it’s ready to enjoy! However, today we will learn how to make black sesame soup from scratch. Making this sweet dessert at home yourself allows you to adjust the sweetness and thickness of the soup.
What is Black sesame soup, 芝麻糊?
Black sesame soup dessert is nice and smooth with a nutty flavor. It can be made either with powdered sesame seeds or full sesame seeds, glutinous rice and rock sugar. The consistency of the soup varies on preference and it can be served as a chinese black sesame pudding or thin like a sweet soup.

Black sesame soup Ingredients
✿ 75 Grams Black Sesame Seeds
✿ 1 Tablespoon White Sesame Seeds
✿ 35 Grams Glutinous Rice
✿ Rock sugar (To Taste)
✿ 3 - 5 Cups Water

Black Sesame Soup Recipe
Soak the glutinous rice at least 4 hours or overnight.
Toast the sesame seeds until aromatic. It will take approx. 5 min.
Add toasted sesame seeds, soaked rice and 2 cups of water to a blender. Blend until smooth . You can strain the mixture if preferred.
Add the blended mixture to a pot. Add 1 - 3 cups extra water depending on your personal preferences/taste. Add rock sugar to taste. Cook on medium heat until desired consistency/thickness. Keep stirring to prevent burning
Serve the soup while hot or you can drink it cold as well.

TIPS & NOTES
✿ You can use any of your favorite sweetener. I use rock sugar for mine.
✿ The cooking time depends of the thickness of the soup you like. The longer you cook it the thicker the soup will be.
✿ Adjust the water depending on personal preferences. For a stronger sesame flavor add less water.
✿ Instead of using sesame seeds, you can use sesame powder as well.
