Puerquito | Mexican Piggy Cookies Recipe

Craving a warm, spiced treat that feels like home? These Puerquitos — also known as Marranitos or Mexican Piggy Cookies — are a beloved type of Mexican sweet bread (pan dulce). Made with rich molasses or piloncillo, warm spices, and a soft, cake-like texture, this traditional treat is as charming as it is delicious.

These pig-shaped cookies are a nostalgic favorite found in Mexican panaderías (bakeries), and now you can easily make them at home!

🐷 What Are Puerquitos?

Puerquitos, meaning "little pigs" in Spanish, are soft Mexican pastries shaped like pigs. They’re mildly sweet, spiced with cinnamon, and made with piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar) or molasses, giving them their signature flavor and dark golden color.

They’re often enjoyed with a cup of coffee, atole, or hot chocolate, especially during cooler months or celebrations like Día de los Muertos or Christmas. Whether you grew up enjoying them from a panadería or you're trying them for the first time, this recipe brings warmth and comfort to your kitchen.

Beat butter until soft. Add the piloncillo. Beat until combined and fluffy . Add 1 egg at a time. Beat until combined. Add the molasses and beat again until combined.

Add in flour(in batches) and all the spices and mix until combined. Keep adding the flour* in batches until dough comes together. Total flour 490 Grams. For the last batch of flour use a spatula to mix. Wrap in plastic. Refrigerate overnight.

Roll dough out Approx. 0.3 - 0.5MM thick. Puerquitos / Marranitos are usually pig shaped. Since I don't have a pig cookie cutter I will be using a panda cutter . This will make approx. 20 cookies.

Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the cookies with egg wash. Bake at 350F for 15 Min.

Cool down on a cooling rack and enjoy! ✿◕ ‿ ◕✿
