What IS Char Siu
BBQ Pork also known as Char Siu -叉烧 or spelled as chasu, chashao, cha sio or char siew is a popular chinese roasted meat. You can find Char Siew at most asian restaurants and it’s a very popular dim sum item on the menu. Not only can this be eaten on its own. It’s been used in a lot of other dishes as well like bbq pork buns, claypot rice and fried rice.
BBQ Pork is full of flavor. It has a sweet and savory sticky sauce coating. Different cuts of pork can be used to make char siu, depending on how lean or fatty you want your char siu to be.
How To Make Chinese BBQ Pork
You may think it’s hard to make, but it is actually really easy. Once you’ve all the ingredients, all you need is an oven or air fryer and time! 😋 Yes it takes about an hour to make, but once it’s finished you’ll have nice hot, fresh, homemade BBQ Pork! 🥰 It can be served with noodles, rice, bread, used as stuffing for buns, dumplings and a lot of other recipes where you can use BBQ pork.

Air Fried Char Siu | BBQ Pork 叉燒
Ingredients
✿ Pork Shoulder
✿ 3 Tablespoons Hoisin Sauce
✿ 1 Tablespoon Honey
✿ 1 Tablespoon Sugar
✿ ½ Tablespoon Soy Sauce
✿ 1 Teaspoon Dark Soy Sauce
✿ 1 Teaspoon 5 Spice Powder
✿ 1 Teaspoon Chicken Powder
✿ ½ Teaspoon Salt
✿ Red Food Coloring (Optional)
✿ Glaze: 1 Tablespoon honey or maltose + 1 Tablespoon hoisin sauce + 1 Tablespoon water

Depending on cut of pork you use, remove bone and excess fat/skin.
Cut in desired thickness to fit in the air fryer.
Mix all the ingredients together for the marinade. Add the pork and combine well. Let the pork marinate overnight.
The next day
Add all the ingredients for the glaze together and combine well. Set aside until use.
Preheat the air fryer. Place the pork inside the air fryer.
Brush the remaining marinade on the pork.
Air fry 360F for 40 Min. Flip halfway and brush on the glaze. Continue air frying for the remaining 20 min.
Cut it up and serve! Delicious to snack on or serve it with some white rice! (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ
TIPS & NOTES
✿ Red food coloring is optional. If you want to present it pretty you can use food coloring or other natural red food
coloring to make the bbq pork look more red.
✿ For the glaze you can use either honey or maltose. Using maltose for the glaze will give it a nice sticky coating. If
you like a stronger honey flavor you can use honey.
✿ Don’t pack the air fryer. Air fry 1 - 2 pieces at a time to make sure there is enough air flow.
✿ If you prefer your BBQ Pork less charred, air fry the pork at 350F instead of 360F
✿ You can adjust marinade to your personal preferences.
