What Is Mantou
Mantou also known as Chinese Steamed Buns is a popular breakfast in China. You can also find Mantou at dim sum restaurants. A Mantou is a plain soft and fluffy steamed bun.
How To Make Mantou
The mantou recipe I am showing you today is super easy. This dough can be used to make other chinese steamed buns as well like BBQ Pork Buns, Custard Steamed Buns and Molten Lava Steamed Buns.
How To Eat Mantou
As I kid I loved to snack on these buns. I would eat them plain but a common way to eat these Mantou is to dip them in condensed milk. You can also fry the Mantou to make Fried Mantou.

Mantou Ingredients
Dough:
✿ 300 Grams Special Bun Flour / All Purpose Flour
✿ 7 Grams Yeast
✿ 60 Grams Sugar
✿ 14 Grams Condensed Milk
✿ Lukewarm Water

Add a little sugar to the yeast and some lukewarm water. Set is aside for approx. 5 min to let it activate.
Add flour, condensed milk, sugar and activated yeast together and start mixing. Slowly pour in more lukewarm water if needed and knead until a dough forms.
When dough forms keep kneading for another 5 minutes until smooth.
Put the dough in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let is rest for 30 min - 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Knead the dough to remove the air inside. Roll the dough into a string into desired thickness.
Cut the dough in desired mantou sizes and place it on top of a parchment paper.
Spray the mantou with some water and cover with a kitchen towel / plastic wrap. Let them rest for 15 - 20 minutes.
When ready to steam bring a pot of water to boil. When water boils place the mantou inside and steam the buns for 7 -10 minutes.
Serve the steamed buns with condensed milk! ✿◕ ‿ ◕✿
TIPS & NOTES
✿ You can use special bun flour for a more fluffy and whiter steamed bun.
✿ Condensed milk in this recipe is optional.
✿ Another way to eat these is to fry up the steamed mantou to make golden brown and crispy mantou!
✿ To store them you can freeze the mantou after they’re steamed. When ready to consume steam the frozen mantou until hot and fluffy.
